Rufus does not really fit in - in his community of sea serpents, he is the only one who can't swim. But when disaster strikes and their secret island needs protection, Rufus must face his deepest fear and save his family.

Their first test, shown in the film, was at the 1962 Canadian Swimming Championships, at which they carried off a number of trophies.
